Pristine white sands abound on Vatersay which lies to the south of Barra. In the middle of the island the land narrows remarkably giving way to West Bay on one side and Vatersay Bay on the other. A memorial above West Bay strikes a poignant note, however. In 1853, 350 shipwrecked and drowned passengers from Liverpool’s Annie Jane were washed ashore. They were emigrants bound for Quebec, but buried on Vatersay.
