Aberford village sits just west of the present A1M and either side of the original route from London to Edinburgh. In 1845 the Gascoigne family established this magnificent row of alms houses in this prime location on a generous four acre site. Sir Nickolaus Pevsner considered the row “an elaborate and ambitious structure”. Closed to the public but well worth a diversion for the coaching inns, church and period houses nearby.
