The former Methodist Chapel in Staithes High Street has been turned into the town’s Heritage Centre, focusing on the history of the fishing village and former smuggling centre. It also tips its hat to the town’s most famous former resident – James Cook, who worked in a shop here before moving to Whitby to pursue his sailing career. The Heritage Centre includes a recreated street scene from 1745, plus displays on former residents of the town, and of the fishing industry here. The top floor is dedicated to James Cook, with a recreation of the shop he worked in, and engravings from his 3rd voyage. The museum is open daily until 5pm.
