The Cathedral Church of St Marie lies hidden away in central Sheffield’s pedestrian shopping area. This Roman Catholic cathedral dates from 1847 when the original chapel in nearby Fargate was deemed too small for its congregation. Based on a 14th century church at Heckington in Lincolnshire, the church is a beautiful example of Gothic architecture and features a tall spire. The lavish decorating was funded with the aid of generous donations from the Duke of Norfolk, his mother, and the parishioners.
