The Chantry Chapel of St Mary the Virgin was built between 1342 and 1356 as part of a new bridge over the River Calder. Originally one of four in Wakefield, it is now one of only four that survive in the country - along with Bradford-on-Avon, Rotherham and St Ives. Today a modern bridge takes all but the pedestrian traffic away. The interior is accessible on the first Sunday of each month and on special open days (normally bank holidays).
