Commanding superb views over the town of Ilkley and lower Wharfedale this large rocky outcrop of Millstone Grit, the “Cow”, and smaller nearby boulder, the “Calf”, was once the site of Ilkley quarry. At an elevation of 420m (1319ft) it is popular with walkers and climbers as it is situated on the edge of the world famous Ilkley Moor. Legend has it that the giant Rombald split the calf from the cow when he stamped on the rock whilst fleeing from an enemy.
