Standing in splendid isolation between Doncaster town centre and the River Don is the impressive parish church of St George. Designed by the famous Victorian architect Sir George Gilbert Scott in the gothic style. It was built by 1858 as a suitably grand replacement for the Norman perpendicular church that was severely damaged by fire in 1853. The prosperity of the town at the time is reflected not just in the size of the building but also the quality of the fittings - especially the stained glass. In 2004 it was inaugurated as Doncaster Minster and in 2005 received a grant of over £300,000 for repairs to the roof of the Forman Chapel.
