Operating for over 100 years this cable-operated tramway is the oldest in the country. It was built by showman Sam Wilson to take visitors from the river level of Saltaire’s Roberts Park up to the beauty spot of Shipley Glen - and a local amusement park. The 20 inch gauge twin tracks climb for around three quarters of a mile through woods hauled by steel cables. Today the motive power is electricity but was originally a gas engine. Opened in 1895 it operated unchanged until the 1960s. It then ran again from 1969 to 1981 when it was halted by a right-of-way dispute. Bradford Council helped fund a rescue by the Bradford Trolleybus Association. It is now operated by unpaid volunteers and provides an experience unchanged since the Vicorian era.
