Historically, Halifax Playhouse, located within easy reach of the town centre, began life as a Methodist Chapel before being converted into a 260 seat theatre in 1945, becoming the regular home of Halifax Thespians. The huge ivy clad building, which has been vastly improved in ensuing years, now stages a varied programme of shows appealing to theatre lovers of all ages. The Playhouse also accommodates a thriving film society which usually meets on Sunday evenings and shows both classic and more contemporary masterpieces. Building work completed in 1995 made the Playhouse fully accessible to wheelchair users and those who are less mobile.
