The coastline down to Saltburn is very straight until you come to Huntcliff, which projects out to sea. At 365 feet above sea level, Huntcliff had been used as one of a number of Roman signalling stations situated along the Yorkshire coast, to protect against the threat of Anglo-Saxon raids from Denmark and Germany. This is a pleasant area for walking but it is always best to check with the Coast Guard as to the tides.
