This magnificent abbey was founded in 1152 by Cistercian monks. By 1539 it had been closed under Henry VIII’s orders. Remarkably, it is one of the best preserved archaeological sites in Britain. It has been a source of inspiration for many famous artists, such as JMW Turner and Thomas Girton. The remnants of the basilica dominate the skyline, but the site also features the ruins of the monk’s living quarters. This is an excellent primary source of how life was like nearly a thousand years ago.
