A Victorian construction across the River Ouse, Lendal Bridge links the city with the railway station and its northern districts. The parapet of the bridge features the ornate designs of the white rose of York, the crossed keys of the Diocese of York, and the lions of England. Further ironwork displays York’s coat of arms and the letters V & A for Victoria and Albert. The bridge was originally intended as a toll bridge and the two tollhouses can still be seen today operating as cafes. The original toll bridge collapsed during construction in 1860 killing five men.
