These gardens were officially opened by Nelson Mandela himself during his visit to Leeds in April 2001. There were 25,000 people at the opening, in which features such as a 16-foot high bronze statue and a contemporary water feature were unveiled. The bronze statue, entitled ‘both arms’ depicts two large arms open for an embrace. It was designed by Leeds born sculptor Kenneth Armitage. There are over 60 trees and 1,500 shrubs planted in the vicinity, along with a water feature placed as the focal point of the garden. Seating areas are provided.
