The battle of Marston Moor was fought on the evening of 2nd July 1644, was the largest battle ever fought on English soil and of strategic importance to the outcome of the English Civil War. The memorial monument to the dead is situated between the villages of Tockwith and Long Marston. About 6,000 men were killed and 1,500 Royalist prisoners were captured. Visitors can learn about the battle through interpretation panels erected around the monument. Every year, on the Sunday prior to or on the 2nd July the Sealed Knot congregate at the Boot and Shoe pub in Tockwith and march to the memorial, where cannons are fired and a memorial service held.
