The latest crossing point for the River Ouse was opened in 2001 and its design was based on the spokes of a bicycle wheel. This design is significant as the bridge was intended to provide a strategic crossing place for some of York’s many cyclists. The bridge quickly became popular with more than 2,000 users per day, more than half of these were cyclists. As well as linking York’s bicycle routes the bridge is an extremely pleasant place to walk from Ouse Bridge and return on the opposite bank of the river after crossing the Millenium Bridge.
