This would once have been one of the most important monasteries in South Yorkshire - a masterpiece of monastic design, standing close to the centre of Barnsley. Built in the 13th Century as a Cluniac monastery with an unusually well-marked ground plan, the ruin has an almost complete gatehouse from the 15th Century. The property is now under the care of English Heritage.
