Bramhope Tunnel runs for over 2 miles and was built for the Leeds & Thisk Railway between 1846 and 1849. Over 2,000 men worked on its construction and once completed a memorial was erected for those who lost their lives. The memorial is a replica of the northern port and records the names of 23 miners and excavators (navvies) employed. It can be found in the churchyard of All Saints Parish Church, Otley.

Thousands of navvies died constructing Britain's railways, but I do not know of any other memorial to them. It should be seen not just as commemmorating the men who died on this line - and if there were only 22 in total then the casualties were far fewer than other railways - but to all the anonymous army who built our railways in the 19th Century. - Anthony Burton, author of The Railway Builders
