Thousands of navvies died constructing Britain's railways, but I do not know of any other memorial to them. It should be seen not just as commemmorating the men who died on this line - and if there were only 22 in total then the casualties were far fewer than other railways - but to all the anonymous army who built our railways in the 19th Century.
