Pontefract Castle which played a vitally important role as an administrative centre during the Middle Ages, is today a shadow of its former self, yet still attracts vast crowds keen to learn more about the histoic background of this royal fortress, which is still associated with the murder of Richard II. Visitors have an opportunity to tour the ruins, including the underground military store or magazine. Additionally, a range of events are often organised, including Ghost Walks and special festivities around the Christmas period. Located close to the town centre admission to the castle is free and wheelchair access to much of the site is possible.
