Opened on the 1st August 1985, Pugneys Country Park, which stands on the outskirts of Wakefield is one of the districts most popular tourist destinations, attracting visitors from far and wide. The park, formerly an open cast site, now covers 250 acres and incorporates a huge central water sports lake which is used for all manner of exhilarating activities from wind surfing to kayaking, with regular classes being held for those interested in learning a new sport. The park, which is accessible to wheelchair users, also incorporates a pleasant cafe open to visitors, a miniature railway, usually operational at weekends, and a popular central path for walkers and joggers.
