Ripon is one of the country's smallest cities, yet has much to recommend it to the visitor. Situated on the banks of the River Ure it retains a great deal of old world charm, with quaint streets, interesting shops and magnificent cathedral, which just beg to be explored. The cathedral, with its long and varied history is closely linked to St Wilfrid, Ripon's patron saint, and is said to be the fourth church to have occupied this historic site. Dominating the surrounding countryside the huge cathedral was constructed largely between 1154 and 1530, with extensive restoration work carried out by Sir Gilbert Scott. It now plays an important role in the religious life of the city, with thousands of pilgrims visiting every year.
