Rudston Monolith, with a height of almost eight metres, is the tallest standing stone in Britain. Some believe its depth into the ground could be as much again. It is situated in the churchyard in the village of Rudston, five miles from Bridlington. Legend has it that the devil threw the stone at the nearby church but missed. Scientific thought, however, believes that it was erected at around 1600 BC. Interestingly it is made of gritstone, the nearest source of which is ten miles away.
