The Victorian town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea is dominated by its sea-front location, of which the centerpiece is its magnificent pier which stretches out from the promenade. The pier was opened in May 1869 and has held firm against the relentless North Sea ever since. Once much longer in length, with mooring for large vessels, the pier today is shorter and has recently been renovated with new decking. Leading from the town to the foot of the pier is the Saltburn Tramway – a two-car funicular railway running on the movement of water. It was opened in 1924 and offers a thrilling ascent or descent. The pier is free to enter; the tramway charges a small admission charge.
