Built in 1853 this massive woolen mill employed 3,000 workers at its peak. It was built on a green fields site selected by successful industrialist Sir Titus Salt for his new mill and model village. The site was selected for its water supply (River Aire), ease of transport for wool and coal (via the Leeds & Liverpool Canal and the Midland Railway) and enough open space to build the houses, schools, shops, churches, parks and hospital needed for his workforce. Today it houses the David Hockney gallery, shops and a restaurant and the adjoining village has been given world heritage status.
