Named after the first mayor of Brighouse, William Smith, this respected West Yorkshire gallery was officially opened by Princess Louise on May 22nd 1907 and originally displayed paintings collected by Alderman Smith and his wife. Initially visitors could see portraits and landscapes by notable artists of the day many of which Smith purchased from exhibitions in the locality. Today, little has changed and the gallery still displays many paintings by Victorian artists. However, temporary exhibitions of works by local and regional painters also feature strongly.
