Saltburn and many of the North Yorkshire coastal villages were known as smuggling centres during the 1700s. Set in ancient fishermen’s cottages on the sea front of Old Saltburn, the award-winning Smugglers Heritage Centre recreates the look, feel and smell of the time. Its informative displays uncover the history and extent of smuggling operations of the time, and follow the life of one John Andrew – ‘King of the Smugglers’. The museum is open daily from March 25th to September 31st.
