Restored and re-opened in 2001 this is the longest (5,029m), deepest (194m) and highest (196m) canal tunnel in Britain. Originally opened in 1811 during "canal mania" and partly engineered by Thomas Telford it is situated on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal between Marsden and Diggle and passes under the Pennines. Convoys of boats are regularly taken through by tugs. Visitors can walk along the canal, explore the nature trails and discover the history at the Visitor Centre before taking an atmospheric glass-roofed boat trip to see this major feat of engineering.
