Described as an oasis of peace, Halifax Parish Church, discoloured by years of indusrial grime, is one of the town's most impressive landmarks, complete with ornate carvings, beautiful stained glass and statue of Old Tristram, a professional beggar who once collected money for the poor of the district. Reputedly constructed on the same site where the head of John the Baptist is buried. The church itself dates from the 15th Century though parts of the building are even earlier. Much enlarged over the years it now plays an important role in the religious and secular life of Halifax and visitors are assured of a warm welcome.
