The Piece Hall in Halifax is without doubt of great architectural importance and stands today as a testament to the town’s glorious industrial past. A Grade 1 listed building it opened in January 1779 as a market for the sale of cloth pieces, hence the name. Ultimately, however, a decline in textile making lead to the conversion of the building into a market for the sale of vegetables and fresh fish. Latterly, this magnificent structure has undergone yet another transformation and now possesses a large number of speciality shops situated in galleries on three levels.
