Situated one mile north of Leeds, this university is within walking distance fo both the city centre and Headingley (famous for its cricketing history). It is widely considered as one of the country's leading places to study and has a good reputation for its research. Famous alumni include former Dire Straits guitarist Mark Knopfler, comedian and impressionist Alistair McGowan and - somewhat less illustriously - serial killer Harold Shipman. The university's students' union has long been a venue for great music acts, having famously hosted The Who's 'Live at Leeds' album in 1970.
