Visitors to Halifax cannot fail to be impressed by the magnificently ornate structure of Wainhouse Tower, which occupies a windswept position high above the Calder Valley. Surrounded by myth and legend it was originally constructed as nothing more elaborate than a mill chimney. However, it never served such a purpose, and eventually had an internal spiral staircase added by owner John Edward Wainhouse. Costing £15,000 to build, it possesses 403 steps which visitors can occasionally climb to obtain stunning views of the surrounding district from the viewing platform.
