Whitby Abbey is situated on a cliff top that overlooks the town of Whitby and the harbour. It is probably Whitby’s most visited attraction due its historical significance and heritage. The abbey dates back to the 7th Century when Oswy, King of Northumbria, sent a Northumbrian princess named Hilda to found an abbey. Today, Whitby Abbey contains a shrine to St. Hilda. The abbey has had a fascinating history, having been destroyed by the Vikings but rebuilt by the Normans, and is well worth visit.
