The whitewashed stone building of White Wells is situated above Ilkley on the edge of the famous moor. Squire Middleton created two open-air spa baths here in the 18th Century to harness the curative effects of the particularly cold mineral water. If the flags are flying, visitors to the house, which dates back to 1703, are still able to take a dip in the icy spa water which made Ilkley famous and was, according to written records from 1710, a cure for tuberculosis.
